They also claim to have DD5.1 or even DTS sound, but the LDs only have AC-3. So you cannot say that they are DVD quality. Um... AC-3 is DD5.1... except in LD language... AC-3 (aka Dolby Digital) is just the compression technique used most commonly these days in DVD soundtracks, which are most often 5.1 surround.

You may have to stop the movie, go to the menu of the movie, and explicitly select the english 5.1 ch sound. The reason the test DVD worked may be because it is one of the few DVDs that are set for 5.1 by default. Finally, try a DVD that is known to have spectacular surround sound: Air Force one.

If you have regular cable service with a coaxial connection then you will get surround sound. Even if you don't have cable and you have an antenna conected to you tv 1980s style you'll still get stereo sound today! If you have a pro-logic 2 receiver then you'll have 5.1 surround sound from that stereo source.
